SAB LGPS “Fiduciary Duty” and “Lobbying”

  • LGPS funds – Fiduciary Duty and Lobbying (click here)
  • The LGPS Scheme Advisory Board published this statement in September.
  • It identifies challenges facing funds about how members pensions are invested.
    • Our Members Forum welcomes this statement, and we suggest it supports our campaign.
    • We hope that CPF will respond with regard to “openness” and “members views”.
      • “best interests” and “best financial interests” may differ
      • the views of members “should” be explored
  • “…elected members have a better understanding of local scheme member views than professional advisers…”
    • “…members and the public have a right to lobby…” and “…peacefully protest against decisions.”
    • “…meetings should be conducted in a way that reflects the seven Principles of Public Life” which are –
    • selflessness,
    • integrity,
    • objectivity,
    • accountability,
    • openness,
    • honesty
    • leadership
    • The principles of openness and honesty will apply to the detail of where funds invest. Some details of the investments by CPF are on the website, but many investments are in closed funds managed by others. CPF may not know wher the final investment is, and may not carry out sufficient due diligence on these investments by other funds.
    • Any changes to investments towards UK companies and UK infrastructure must be clear and open
